SUNDAY SPLEEN VENTING
Why religion is bad
Not that I have anything against God, Allah or Oprah, but religion has always been the number one reason for wars and infighting among humans (the worst species on the planet to begin with.) The reason for this is that religions are a man made thing--ethereal beings can't hold a pencil or type. Man has taken it upon himself to "interpret" what the All Powerful supposedly said. Even when there were no witnesses, or the press, around to hear it. And don't even get me started on this "faith" thing. (Your check is in the mail. Have faith!)
If Jesus were to actually come back--and leave the tropical planet where he drinks gin & tonics on a beach and watches us fuck things up--he would smite the hell out of a major percentage of the people. He would probably begin the smoting with Pat Robertson. Missionaries would be in for a good smoting, too. I live in an area of the Amazon where the population is mostly indigenous people and I have seen the results of missionary work (i.e. brain washing) and have met a number of missionaries. These are people who actually have so little faith that they feel the need to impose their will (in God's name, of course) on other people. They bribe these uneducated people with pots & pans, machetes, etc. to get them to come listen. Some of the evangelical missionaries (a group that does battle with the Catholics) have actually come out and said that the Pope is the Devil. Well, OK, maybe they got that one right. One Catholic Church in a small village has medicines on hand for people who can't afford to buy them, but the catch is you have to attend Mass five consecutive days in able to be elegible for the medicines.
So, religion has blighted our species and now things are made worse by the two major fanatical religious groups: the Islamic fundamentalists (who don't really follow the teachings of Islam) and the Bush administration (who don't really follow the teachings of Jesus.)
God help us all.

"Metaphors only seem to describe the outer world of time and place. Their real universe is the spiritual realm of the inner life. The Kingdom of God is within you." Joseph Campbell

The reason people fight over religious texts is because they do not view them as the metaphors they are, but literal truth. Jesus and all Gods sit with a G & T in the tropical islands of our hearts, waiting for us to realize that we can always join them. The invitation is open. But to be upset with these literalists is like being mad at a five year old who does not yet understand algebra. They have not learned yet the the mystery of the secret which they already know.

Would agree with Conrad, except for the word Kingdom.
Would disagree with the part about literalists - they aren't 5 year-olds. They have been brainwashed, frightened (Bush's favortie strategy)and are unable to think on their own. Maybe they are Blinded By The Light.
How can someone "already know" a "secret" Some secret.
Yea verily,
Scott

How did you know how to breathe when you entered into the world? How did your heart know how to beat? Are these not secrets that you knew instinctively, but learned the science for later in life? How did you know that the sun feels good on your face? And you are right...five-year-olds are much more eager for knowledge that adult literalists. And if all literalists are brainwashed…did Christain and Muslim world leaders brainwash themselves?
